Best Home EV Charger in Ireland

The grant decides your shortlist. Your ESB connection decides the power. Your roof decides the rest.

If you want the SEAI grant, the choice is already narrowed for you: the scheme only supports smart chargers listed on SEAI's Smart Charger Register, and every unit on that register has passed the same functional test. That is why most "best charger" lists read the same. The differences that actually change your bill in Ireland are narrower and duller: whether the charger can chase surplus solar, whether it needs your WiFi to reach the end of the drive, and whether it already meets the standards SEAI is drafting into the register right now.

The short answer (September 2026):
  • Grant: up to €300, and only for a charger on SEAI's Smart Charger Register, fitted by a Safe Electric registered electrician
  • Power: 7kW single phase for almost every Irish home. 22kW needs a three-phase supply that most houses do not have
  • If you have solar: buy a charger with true surplus-only charging and a CT clamp fitted at the meter, not just a timer
  • If you don't: a scheduling charger on a night rate does most of the saving
  • Typical Irish price: roughly €1,050 to €1,199 fitted, with the grant already deducted

Start With the Register, Not the Reviews

SEAI states it plainly: "The EV Home Charger Grant Scheme will only support smart chargers which are registered on SEAI's Smart Charger Register." That register is not a quality ranking or an editorial pick. It is held on SEAI's Triple E product register, though SEAI treats it as a separate submission from a standard Triple E listing, and manufacturers, importers and distributors put their own products on it by declaring against a fixed list of attributes. The requirement has applied since September 2022.

Two practical consequences. First, a charger that is cheaper because it is not on the register costs you €300 and cannot be retrofitted into the grant afterwards. Second, when you apply, you pick your exact product from a drop-down before approval, and your electrician has to confirm after installation that the product on the list is the product on the wall. Choose the model before you apply, not after.

What SEAI Actually Means by "Smart"

The word gets used loosely by sellers. On the register it has a specific meaning, set out in SEAI's Triple E eligibility criteria for electric vehicles and associated charging equipment. To be listed, a charger must:

  • receive, send and process information, and react by adjusting its rate of charging or discharging
  • adjust its operation based on data from an external device such as a power meter
  • monitor, record and transmit energy consumption
  • show charging status on the unit itself through lights, LEDs or a display
  • inhibit Mode 1 and Mode 2 charging, so it will not fall back to a domestic socket
  • have under-voltage and over-voltage cut-out protection
  • fail safe from the factory if communication with the outside world drops
  • have security measures against cyber-attack, with the encryption described in the submission

Note what is not on that list. Solar surplus charging is not required. OCPP is an optional field, recorded if the manufacturer claims it. V2G is recorded but not mandatory. IP rating is captured anywhere from 44 to 69, so "weatherproof" covers a wide range in practice. The register guarantees a floor, not a ceiling, and every meaningful difference between two grant-eligible chargers sits above that floor.

Worth checking before you buy: the register records the warranty period the manufacturer declared. Warranties on Irish-sold home chargers commonly run three years. It is one of the few comparable numbers SEAI holds on every listed product, and it is the one buyers most often forget to ask about.

The Rules Are Being Rewritten Right Now

SEAI published a consultation in August 2026 on updated qualification requirements for home charge points, with responses closing on 18 September 2026. It matters to anyone buying this year, because it tells you which features are about to move from optional to expected.

The draft adds five new questions to the register criteria:

One of the consultation questions asks industry whether the new requirements cause difficulty "where the requirements were to become active no sooner than 1st January 2027". Nothing is settled until SEAI publishes the final criteria. But if you are choosing between two similar chargers in late 2026, the one already declaring ISO 15118 support is the one less likely to look dated by the time you sell the house.

7kW or 22kW: Your ESB Connection Decides

This is the question most people spend the longest on and it usually has one answer. A 22kW charger needs a three-phase supply. The standard Irish domestic connection is single phase, and ESB Networks sizes it at 12kVA, which allows a maximum demand of 52 amps averaged over ten minutes. The enhanced 16kVA connection allows 70 amps.

A 7kW charger draws up to 32 amps. On a 12kVA connection that is most of your house's headroom in one appliance, which is why a 9kW electric shower running at the same time is a real consideration and why load management matters more than raw power. Going the other way costs money:

Those are standard charges from the ESB Networks Statement of Charges (Revision 22, October 2025), and they sit before any switchboard upgrade your electrician says you need. Spending four figures on a network connection to feed a charger is rarely justified by an overnight charge, and there is a second reason it usually makes no difference: the car is the bottleneck. AC charging speed is capped by the vehicle's onboard charger. Ohme puts the typical ceiling at "up to 7kW for most EVs or 3.5kW for some hybrids", rising to 11kW only for compatible cars on a three-phase charger. A 22kW unit on a car that accepts 7kW charges at 7kW.

The exception. If you are building or deep-retrofitting and the three-phase supply is going in anyway, or you already have one for a workshop or a farmyard, then a three-phase charger is worth specifying while the trench is open. Retrofitting it later for an EV alone almost never pays.

If You Have Solar, This Is the Only Feature That Matters

For a solar household the charger's job changes. Instead of moving the load to the cheapest hour, it moves the load to the hour your own panels are producing more than the house is using. Exported units earn you the Clean Export Guarantee rate; units you put into the car instead avoid buying at the day rate. The gap between those two numbers is the saving, and only a charger that can read your import and export in real time can chase it.

That reading comes from a CT clamp fitted on the incoming live cable near your meter. No clamp, no surplus charging, no matter what the box says on the app store. Ohme is explicit that a missing or unread CT clamp is one of the two most common reasons its solar feature never appears for a customer.

The two systems Irish buyers meet most often work differently:

  • myenergi zappi has three modes. Fast charges at full power. Eco adjusts charging in real time and tops up from the grid so the car still gets charged. Eco+ pauses charging when too much power is being imported and resumes only when surplus is available. Eco+ is the surplus-only setting.
  • Ohme offers Solar Boost on most Home Pro and ePod units installed from January 2023 onward. Solar Boost hits your target time with a mix of solar and grid, spending any surplus on top. A stricter setting waits for 1.44kW (6A) of excess before it starts, and a "Solar Only" option that never uses grid power is listed by Ohme as coming in summer 2026.

The numbers behind those thresholds are the part worth understanding, because they are set by the car, not the charger. Ohme gives the EV's minimum charging rate as 1.44kW, or 6 amps. Its more permissive setting starts as soon as 0.72kW of solar is detected and buys the other 0.72kW from the grid to reach that floor. Its stricter setting waits for the full 1.44kW so nothing is imported. On a bright Irish afternoon in June, a 4kWp array clears that threshold comfortably. In February, or under moving cloud, a system can hover just under it for an hour at a time, which is exactly when the permissive setting quietly starts buying electricity.

If you have a home battery too: Ohme warns that its charger cannot tell where the electricity is coming from, so a battery set to discharge while the car is plugged in will be drained into the car. Set the battery not to discharge during solar charging. The same logic applies to a hot water diverter competing for the same surplus: decide which load has first claim on it.

Tethered or Untethered

Tethered means a cable permanently attached to the unit. Untethered means a socket you plug your own Type 2 cable into. Irish buyers get both options from the same manufacturers, and the trade-off is genuinely personal rather than technical:

  • Tethered is faster in daily use, especially in the rain, and there is no cable to leave in the boot. Standard cable lengths sold here are 5m, 6.5m and 8m. Measure from the proposed charger position to your car's charging port on the side it actually sits on.
  • Untethered is tidier on a front wall, lets you swap to a longer cable later, and copes with a Type 1 car without replacing the unit. It is also the safer choice if two cars with different needs share the drive.

Type 2 is the connector standard on essentially every EV sold new in Ireland and mainland Europe. Type 1 appears on older Asian and American models. If you buy untethered, buy the cable at the same time.

WiFi or a Built-In SIM

An underrated deciding factor. A smart charger that cannot reach the internet loses its schedule, its solar logic and its app. Chargers sold in Ireland split into two camps: WiFi units, and units with a mobile connection built in.

myenergi's zappi connects over WiFi. Ohme's ePod and Home Pro connect over 3G/4G, so they do not depend on your router reaching the gable end. If your charger will be more than a few metres from the house, or behind a block wall, that difference is worth more than any feature comparison. Where a solar-aware charger is concerned it is not cosmetic: lose the connection and you lose surplus charging.

OCPP is the other connectivity term you will see. It is an open protocol that lets a charger talk to third-party management platforms rather than only the manufacturer's own app. zappi supports OCPP 1.6J through a cloud-to-cloud setup on WiFi models, as a free firmware update. For a household it changes little today. It matters if you ever need to log business mileage or hand control to a supplier's platform.

What You Will Actually Pay in Ireland

Two ways to buy: hardware on its own plus your own electrician, or a fitted package from a supplier with the grant handled for you. Prices verified in September 2026:

Read the fitted prices carefully: they already have the €300 grant taken off, so the pre-grant figure is €300 higher and you do not get the grant again. Read the hardware prices carefully too, because an installation on top can easily add several hundred euro depending on the run.

What a Standard Installation Covers

Electric Ireland's published scope is a useful benchmark for what "standard" means anywhere: the charger fitted on an outside wall, a cable to an isolator switch (required under Safe Electric rules), then on to your consumer unit or meter, using surface-mounted cabling, allowing 10 metres of cable and drilling through two walls. Anything beyond that is quoted as extra. The install itself takes two to three hours; lead times run two to four weeks.

Two details that change the price of the day:

  • Cable run. The distance from your consumer unit to the charger position is the single biggest variable. Walk it before you get quotes.
  • Earthing. Some chargers need an earth rod driven outside; others have PEN fault detection built in and do not. myenergi cites built-in PEN fault protection on zappi as removing the need for an additional earth rod. Ask any installer whether their quote includes an earth rod, because it is a common late addition.

How to Choose in Five Minutes

  1. Confirm the model is on SEAI's Smart Charger Register before applying, and apply before any work starts. The grant offer is valid for six months.
  2. Assume 7kW single phase unless you already have three-phase for another reason.
  3. Solar on the roof? Insist on surplus-only charging and a CT clamp at the meter, and check the mode name, not the marketing.
  4. No solar? Pick on scheduling quality and connectivity, then put the charger on a night rate. Most of the saving is in the tariff.
  5. Charger far from the router? Choose a unit with its own mobile connection.
