Adding a 5 kWh battery to a solar installation in Ireland costs about €1,300 to €1,400 on top of the system price, according to Galway and Dublin installer PureVolt. Add the same battery later as a retrofit and you are into a different bracket: Switcher.ie puts the whole-market range for a battery added to solar at €1,500 to €4,000. The gap is not the battery. It is the second site visit, the extra electronics, and the inverter already sitting on the wall, which on most battery-free Irish systems has to be either worked around or replaced.
People search for a "5kW solar battery" but almost always mean a 5 kWh battery. kWh is capacity, how much electricity the battery holds. kW is power, how fast it can push that electricity out. Installers price and quote batteries by kWh, so that is the number to compare between quotes.

Those two ranges are not contradicting each other. The narrow one is what a single installer charges to drop a small battery into a job its team is already doing. The wide one covers everything: bigger capacities, premium brands, and retrofits where somebody has to come back out to a finished system.
There is a third number worth knowing, and it comes out of arithmetic rather than a price list. PureVolt's battery calculator, quoted by Switcher, shows a 5.1 kWh installation saving €3,713 by the end of its warranty and turning a profit of €1,213. Subtract one from the other and the battery in that example cost about €2,500. That sits between the two published ranges, which is roughly where a real quote tends to land once the small print is in.
Why the Same Battery Has Two Prices
Most of what you pay for a battery is not the battery. PureVolt breaks the extra cost into three parts: the battery unit itself, the more expensive hybrid inverter needed to manage it, and the wiring, mounting and additional labour around both.
On day one, the installer is already on your roof, already running cable, already commissioning an inverter. Specifying the hybrid version instead of the basic one costs €200 to €400 more. Everything else is marginal.
Come back in three years and none of that is true. It is a fresh site visit, fresh commissioning, and quite possibly a whole new inverter. That is the same reason PureVolt notes that replacing a battery later is far cheaper than the first one: the expensive supporting kit is already on the wall and does not need doing twice.
The Inverter Question That Decides Your Retrofit Price
This is the part that catches people out, and it rarely comes up until they ring an installer for a retrofit quote.
The cheap way to add storage to an existing system is a DC-coupled battery, which hangs off a hybrid inverter and lets the panels charge it without converting the electricity twice. PureVolt only retrofits batteries where a hybrid inverter went in originally, and most Irish systems installed without a battery have a plain string inverter or micro-inverters instead. On that route the answer is not "it costs more", it is "the inverter gets replaced first".
There is a second route. An AC-coupled battery brings its own inverter, so it can bolt onto a system whose existing inverter knows nothing about batteries. Switcher's guidance is that AC systems are easier to retrofit and cheaper to install for exactly that reason, while a DC system is the better choice if you are installing new panels anyway. The trade-off is efficiency: an AC-coupled battery converts the electricity from DC to AC and back again before storing it, and you lose a little at each step.
So a retrofit is rarely impossible. It is a choice between replacing a working inverter and accepting a less efficient arrangement, and either way it costs more than the €1,300 you would have paid to have the battery included on day one.
Ask every installer to price the job two ways: with a hybrid inverter and without. If you think a battery is even a maybe for later, the hybrid inverter is the cheap decision to make today and an awkward one to reverse. Ask them to leave wall space for the battery too.
What 5 kWh Actually Covers in an Irish Home
Five kilowatt-hours is a modest store. Switcher's rule of thumb is that a 5 kWh battery runs a few appliances such as a fridge and a TV for roughly ten hours. PureVolt puts it more vividly: enough to boil an average kettle non-stop for two and a half hours.
Set that against household demand. The average Irish home uses about 4,200 kWh of electricity a year, a little under 11.5 kWh a day. A 5 kWh battery therefore covers a good chunk of an evening, not a day.
It will not soak up a summer surplus either. PureVolt reckons an average three-bed generates 20 kWh or more on a sunny summer day, so a battery this size stores about a quarter of it. On a dark December day, when the same array might produce a handful of units, the battery takes the lot.
What it does reliably is lift how much of your own generation you actually use. PureVolt puts self-consumption at 65 to 70 per cent without a battery, rising to 85 to 90 per cent with one. Treat that starting point as an installer's optimistic case, because a household that is out all day can sit well below it, in which case the battery's uplift is bigger rather than smaller. Either way the principle is the whole financial case in a sentence: every unit you keep is a unit you are not selling at the export rate and buying back at the import rate.
What a 5 kWh Battery Saves in a Year
The most useful Irish worked example at this capacity comes from PureVolt's battery savings calculator, published by Switcher and priced on Electric Ireland's Home Electric+ Night Boost tariff with the online billing discount, correct as of July 2026. On a 5.1 kWh battery:
- €210 a year from storing solar surplus instead of exporting it
- €160 a year from charging on night rate and using it during the day
- €371 a year in total, giving a 6.7-year payback
Note where more than a third of that comes from. Not the sun. The night-rate half of the strategy runs 365 days a year and does not care what the weather is doing, which is why PureVolt recommends anyone with a battery move to a day/night tariff, and why the case for a small battery holds up better in an Irish winter than people expect. On its own smart-rate figures, PureVolt puts the night-charging benefit alone at €314.52 a year.
Those numbers are tariff-dependent, and tariffs move. Since 1 June 2026 every major supplier has had to offer a dynamic tariff, where the price changes through the day, which gives a battery more to work with than a flat day/night split does. Ask your supplier what your export rate and peak rate actually are before you accept anyone's payback figure, including this one.
No Grant, and the VAT Question
There is no SEAI grant for a battery. Not for 5 kWh, not for any size. The battery grant was withdrawn in February 2022 when the Microgeneration Scheme arrived, on the logic that homes could now sell surplus power rather than store it. The Solar Electricity Grant is calculated purely on the size of your panel array: €700 per kWp up to 2 kWp, then €200 for every additional kWp up to 4 kWp, capped at €1,800. VAT is the support that people miss. The zero rate applies to the supply and installation of solar PV in private dwellings, and Revenue's guidance as installers read it treats the whole system as zero-rated, including ancillary items such as batteries, wiring and labour. EV chargers are the notable exception and stay at 13.5 per cent. The distinction that matters for a battery is whether it forms part of a solar PV supply-and-install contract or is a standalone purchase on its own. Get the VAT treatment written into the quote either way, because on a €1,400 battery the difference is not trivial.
Is 5 kWh the Right Size?
PureVolt calls 5 kWh the most common domestic battery size in Ireland and says about two thirds of its customers add storage, with roughly 15 per cent taking more than one unit. Switcher, looking at the same market, suggests an 8 kWh battery for an average three-bed. Both can be right, because size follows usage rather than house size.
- 5 kWh works for one or two people, a modest array of 2 to 4 kWp, and evening use that is cooking and lighting rather than an electric shower. It is also the sensible starting point if you have a hybrid inverter and can add a second unit later.
- Go bigger if there is an EV on the drive, people at home all day, or a 5 kWp-plus array producing more surplus than 5 kWh can hold. - Skip the battery for now if the array is small, you are out all day and on a flat-rate tariff with nothing to arbitrage. Specify the hybrid inverter anyway and keep the door open.
Two other things worth pricing into the decision. A battery does not keep the lights on in a power cut unless the system was specifically designed for it. And batteries do not last as long as panels: PureVolt puts life expectancy at 7 to 10 years, Switcher gives a wider 5 to 15, and most warranties run 10 years or around 6,000 cycles while guaranteeing at least 70 per cent of original capacity at the end.
