SEAI pays a flat €600 grant towards a battery of 5 kWh or larger, so a 5 kWh battery is the smallest size that qualifies.

The merchant price is for the battery alone, with nobody to fit it. When you get quotes, ask each installer to list the battery, the inverter and the labour separately, so you can see where the money goes.
The Inverter Question
Energia describes two ways a battery can connect to your panels:
- DC-coupled: stores the direct current your panels generate. Energia says it is more efficient than an AC system but takes longer to install.
- AC-coupled: the panels' output goes through an inverter to become alternating current, and is converted back to DC before it is stored. Energia says this type can charge from the grid and makes upgrades simpler.

What 5 kWh Covers in an Irish Home
The standard figure suppliers use for a year's household electricity is 4,200 kWh, which works out at a little over 11.5 kWh a day. A 5 kWh battery holds well under half a day's average use, so think of it as covering an evening rather than a day. A home that uses less, or runs its heavy appliances in daylight while the panels are producing, gets more from it.
The Grant and the Paperwork
SEAI's Battery Energy Storage System grant is a flat €600 for a battery of 5 kWh or larger. Batteries smaller than 5 kWh are not eligible. The rules that catch people out:
- You must wait for a grant offer from SEAI before the battery goes in.
- An SEAI registered solar PV contractor must install it.
- A property that already received a battery grant is not eligible again.
- If you are fitting panels and a battery together, one application covers both grants.
The solar PV grant tops out at €1,800, so with the battery grant the most you can get is €2,400. Solar panels for homes have carried 0% VAT since 1 May 2023. Ask your installer how VAT applies to the battery in your quote.
Is 5 kWh the Right Size?
