The boiler scrappage grant is worth €2,000 and it is live. It was announced on 29 September 2026 and, unlike the rest of that package, it did not wait for 6 October. You get it when you remove an oil or gas boiler, a solid fuel system or electric storage heating and install a heat pump. You cannot claim it on its own, and you cannot claim it for fitting another boiler.
SEAI has confirmed that homeowners with an active heat pump grant application get the €2,000 added automatically, including people whose works are not finished and people who have already filed their Declaration of Works and are waiting to be paid. In SEAI's words, "no action is required from applicants". Checked on SEAI's heat pump system grant page, 3 October 2026.
What the Boiler Scrappage Grant Actually Pays For
Ireland has never had a boiler grant, and still does not. SEAI says plainly that it does not fund new or replacement fossil fuel boilers. What changed on 29 September is that the state now puts a price on removal: €2,000 for swapping an existing fossil fuel or electric storage heating system for a heat pump.
The qualifying systems, as SEAI lists them, are an oil or gas boiler, a solid fuel system, or electric storage heating. There is also a case most coverage has missed: SEAI says the grant is paid to homeowners without central heating where a heat pump is being installed. If you are heating a house with plug-in heaters and an open fire, you are not disqualified for having no boiler to scrap.
- You are installing a heat pump. The scrappage grant has no standalone application.
- Your house was built and occupied before 2021. The Government's own measure description says the scheme is for houses built pre-2021, and the same cut-off applies to the heat pump grant it sits inside.
- You are decarbonising, not replacing like with like. Swapping one heat pump for another does not qualify.
The Heat Pump Bundle Has Been Rebuilt Around It
The €2,000 did not simply get bolted on. SEAI has restructured how the heat pump grant is described. On the individual grant route, the bundle is now three components:
| Component | Amount | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Heat pump unit grant | Up to €10,500 | The heat pump system itself |
| Central heating grant | Up to €2,000 | Radiators or underfloor heating, where the install design needs them |
| Boiler scrappage grant | €2,000 | Removing the oil or gas boiler, solid fuel or electric storage system |
| Maximum bundle | €14,500 | Detached, semi-detached, end of terrace or mid-terrace house |
Source: SEAI heat pump system grant, read 3 October 2026.
If you read about this grant in the first days after the announcement, you may have seen the bundle described as €6,500 for the unit plus a separate €4,000 renewable heat bonus. That was how the page read before. The two have been merged into the single €10,500 unit grant, and the separate bonus line is gone from the individual grant page. The total is the same either way; the composition is not, and it matters if you are checking a quote line by line against SEAI's figures.
By dwelling type
| System | House | Apartment |
|---|---|---|
| Air to water | €14,500 | €11,500 |
| Ground source to water | €14,500 | €11,500 |
| Exhaust air to water | €14,500 | €11,500 |
| Water to water | €14,500 | €11,500 |
| Air to air | €9,500 | €9,500 |
| Technical assessment | €200 | €200 |
"Up to" is doing real work in that table. SEAI is explicit that you cannot receive a grant larger than the cost of the works, and that eligibility for the central heating and scrappage components depends on your contractor's installation design. A small, simple job on a well-insulated house will not draw down €14,500.
The One Stop Shop Route Has Not Caught Up
There are two ways to get a heat pump grant in Ireland: apply yourself under Better Energy Homes and manage the job, or let a One Stop Shop run the whole upgrade and deduct the grants from your invoice up front. The scrappage grant has appeared on the first route. On 3 October 2026 it had not appeared on the second.
The One Stop Shop grant table still lists heat pump systems at €6,500, a renewable heating system bonus at €4,000 and a central heating system grant at €2,000, which is €12,500 for a detached house, with no scrappage line anywhere on the page. A banner on that same page says heat pump system grant amounts have been increased and that open applications will be uplifted automatically, so the table and the banner currently disagree with each other.
We are not going to tell you the One Stop Shop route excludes the €2,000, because SEAI has not said that. What is verifiable today is that the published One Stop Shop table does not contain it and the published individual grant table does. If you are mid-way through a One Stop Shop upgrade, that is a specific question worth asking your provider in writing before you sign: is the boiler scrappage grant included in my quoted grant total, and if not, when.
How to Claim It
There is no scrappage application form. You apply for the heat pump system grant and the scrappage component is assessed as part of it.
- Check the heat loss. Homes built before 2007 need a technical assessment unless a valid BER shows a Heat Loss Indicator of 2.3 W/(K.m²) or less. There is a €200 grant towards it. Homes built from 2007 onwards use a self-declaration form instead.
- Get quotes from SEAI-registered contractors. Registration has to cover the specific work being done, not just the company name.
- Apply before any work starts. Online applications are approved in minutes; postal applications take about five working days. You then have 30 days to accept the offer, or you reapply.
- Get the works done and a post-works BER. You have eight months from the offer date to draw down, and there is a €50 grant towards the BER.
- Send in the paperwork. Declaration of Works, Request for Payment, and a tax clearance certificate if your grant payments pass €10,000 in one calendar year. Allow four to six weeks for payment.
The eight-month drawdown window is the one that catches people. Heat pump installs in Ireland are frequently quoted months out, so the clock can start while you are still waiting for a start date. Full process detail is on our heat pump grant page.
If You Just Want a New Boiler, This Is Not It
Plenty of people searching for a "boiler scrappage scheme" want help replacing a dead oil boiler with a new one. That grant does not exist in Ireland, and the scrappage grant does not change it. It pays for removal on the way to a heat pump, not for a replacement boiler. The closest thing available if you are keeping your boiler is the €700 heating controls grant. We set out what is and is not claimable, and why two of the top search results quote a grant that is not on SEAI's list, on our oil boiler replacement grant page.
Where Solar Fits
A heat pump roughly triples your house's electricity demand and moves it into the winter. That is the honest version. It is also why the two grants are so often claimed together: the SEAI Solar Electricity Grant of up to €1,800 is a separate scheme with a separate application, and nothing about claiming one affects the other.
The sums work on avoided imports rather than exports. Every kilowatt-hour of solar your heat pump uses on site is a unit you are not buying at the retail rate, and one solar kWh through a heat pump running at a seasonal performance factor of 3 becomes roughly three kWh of heat. Exporting that same unit instead earns you the best standard Clean Export Guarantee rate on the market in October 2026, 19.5c, against an import price of 34.38c on SEAI's Band DD figure, so using it at home is worth noticeably more. The limit is seasonal and worth being blunt about: your panels produce least in December and January, which is exactly when the heat pump wants most. The scrappage grant came out of the National Energy Affordability Taskforce, and it arrived inside a wider package: a €600 home battery grant, solar PV and solar thermal grant eligibility widening to houses built before 2025, fully funded solar and battery under the Warmer Homes Scheme, and a temporary rise in the business solar grant rate from around 23% to 45% of eligible costs. Everything in that list except the scrappage grant starts on 6 October 2026. The Government puts the household saving from the scrappage measure itself at up to €185 a year, which reflects the heating switch rather than the grant.
Our full breakdown of the package is on SEAI grant changes, October 2026, and the €600 battery grant has its own page at solar battery grant Ireland.
Frequently Asked Questions
€2,000. It is paid when you remove an oil or gas boiler, a solid fuel system or electric storage heating and install a heat pump. It sits inside the SEAI heat pump system grant, which now runs to a maximum of €14,500 for a house and €11,500 for an apartment.
Yes. It was announced on 29 September 2026 and took effect immediately for eligible applicants, unlike the other measures in the same package, which start on 6 October 2026.
No. There is no standalone scrappage application. You apply for the heat pump system grant and select Heat Pump System on the measures page of the online application. If you already have a heat pump application in the system, SEAI applies the €2,000 automatically, including where works are incomplete or where you have filed your Declaration of Works and are awaiting payment.
No. SEAI does not grant-aid new or replacement fossil fuel boilers. The scrappage grant pays for taking the old system out as part of installing a heat pump. If you are keeping your boiler, the €700 heating controls grant is the only directly relevant support.
You can still get it. SEAI states that the boiler scrappage grant is also paid to homeowners without central heating where a heat pump is being installed.
Unclear as of 3 October 2026. The individual grant route lists the €2,000 scrappage component and a €14,500 maximum. The One Stop Shop grant table still shows heat pump systems at €6,500, a renewable heating system bonus at €4,000 and a central heating grant at €2,000, with no scrappage line, although a banner on the same page says heat pump amounts have increased and open applications will be uplifted automatically. Ask your One Stop Shop in writing whether the €2,000 is inside your quoted grant total.
Yes. The heat pump system grant and the SEAI Solar Electricity Grant of up to €1,800 are separate schemes with separate applications, and claiming one does not affect the other. Many homeowners pair them, because solar cuts the running cost of the heat pump by covering part of its daytime electricity demand.
No. The scrappage scheme covers houses built pre-2021, and the heat pump grant it sits within requires a home built and occupied before 2021. The eligibility widening to homes built before 2025 announced in the same package applies to the solar PV and solar thermal grants, not to the heat pump grant.
